Day 1: Kick-off

After the introduction lecture we met up with the team and got to know each other. In order to get a good picture of the project (developing Matti for elderly) we had a short discussion on the subject. During the afternoon Arno Penders from Creative Therapy by REVAKI & UGent explained and showed Matti. We also had the opportunity to interact with it and ask questions to Arno Penders. The most important remarks of Arno were: - Elderly like to compete and have fun - It is interesting to keep a diary - We do not have to stay with the shape of the mat - The game is not supposed to be boring - Games nurge the body and mind - One of the difficulties for the elderly is to link the visual inputs from the screen to the mat - The price of the mat is €350. When we started thinking about the people in retirement homes, we realized that the inhabitants could be categorized in four main categories: - Elderly who are mentally and physically (quite) okay - Physically disabled,...

Day 4: Visit @ WZC Heilig Hart

Today our team visited WZC Heilig Hart to execute tests concerning Matti. In total, seven persons participated in the activity with an age between 70 and 89 years old. We tested the following things: - How well can they walk on the mat? - Does the mat provide enough stability like it is now? - Can you get on the mat with a walking aid? - What is the feeling of the texture of the mat? What is enjoyable and what isn’t? - Except from movement, can we give them other stimuli as well? (Sound, visuals, touch ... smells?) - They can distinguish colors and remember those? - Do they...

Day 2: Preparing for interview

In the morning after the the design talk we went to WZC De Pottelberg and tried to arrange a moment that we could come to the retirement home to talk to the elderly. Our offer got accepted and on Wednesday morning (14 feb) we can go and visit the retirement home. The only restriction we got was that we could only go with two members of our team as the elderly get easily overwelmed. By talking to the head of the retirement home, she let us know that 96% of the people who live there need constant care. She also dissuaded us to work with people that are mentally and physically disabled as they don’t realize what happens around them and they can be very unpredictable. So tomorrow we won’t be meeting people that are mentally and physically disabled, but we will be meeting people that are mentally and physically okay, mentally okay but physically disabled and physically okay but mentally disabled. So even though the visit to WZC Heilig Hart is on Thursday, the team decided to als...
