Day 2: Preparing for interview

In the morning after the the design talk we went to WZC De Pottelberg and tried to arrange a moment that we could come to the retirement home to talk to the elderly. Our offer got accepted and on Wednesday morning (14 feb) we can go and visit the retirement home. The only restriction we got was that we could only go with two members of our team as the elderly get easily overwelmed.
By talking to the head of the retirement home, she let us know that 96% of the people who live there need constant care. She also dissuaded us to work with people that are mentally and physically disabled as they don’t realize what happens around them and they can be very unpredictable. So tomorrow we won’t be meeting people that are mentally and physically disabled, but we will be meeting people that are mentally and physically okay, mentally okay but physically disabled and physically okay but mentally disabled.
So even though the visit to WZC Heilig Hart is on Thursday, the team decided to also visit WZC De Pottelberg, because it would be easier to create a persona and to get to know the user.
During the afternoon, the preparing for the interviews started. The team decided to do a brainstorming about the questions we could ask and categorised them. Some questions were more general and could possibly be an ice breaker or for a deeper conversation to start. The team also wanted to know the relation between elderly and games, therefore some questions were specified on that.
The categories were:
- General - Activities that already exist
- Interaction
- Movement
- Games
At first the questions were both open and closed, but after a talk with Dr. Michael Hall the team decided to go through all the questions and skip some of them in order to get more open questions. This will make the elderly have an open mind when answering the question.
