Day 5: Presentation and feedback

Today we prepared the PowerPoint (according to the rules that had been formulated) for the presentation of our three concepts. It was stated that we would present to a jury, students who also worked on the Matti project and to Arno Penders from Matti itself. Because of this, we decided not to explain Matti again as the public would be familiar with the concept already. (You can find our presentation here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X5yES1lwB_CfRKvtPjzLFnmsEn7LsTuF/view)

The final concepts we presented, were the following:

Bubble Pop
In Bubble Pop the user only uses Matti itself without a screen. On the mat several bubbles are displayed and the user can pop them by standing onto the bubbles. When one of the bubbles is popped a sound can be heard. Of course, it would be possible to develop the hardware in such a way that the game could be played on the table by using your hands.
For this game we already thought about developing certain game modes. At this moment the idea has four of them, namely: Free mode, Adventure mode, Drawing mode and Exercise mode.
In Free mode, you can just pop the bubbles however you like. Within this mode, there is also an option to choose for regular of creative free mode. In regular free mode you just pop the bubbles as they are and they will disappear or you’ll see that they have been flattened. During creative free mode, the bubbles are filled with (virtual) paint and when the user steps on them, the paint will splash all over. Afterwards you’ll be able to look at your artwork.
In Adventure mode, the goal is to pop all the bubbles. This mode will have certain levels and the difficulty will increase. First the bubbles will be static, afterwards they will start to move and as you get further into the game, there will even be some bubbles that you can’t pop because there are spikes on them.
In Drawing mode, the user has to recreate a drawing with the bubbles. The bubbles the user will have to tap will be in a dull colour and when the user steps on them, the colour will change to a vibrant one so the person will know the bubble is activated now.
Last but not least, you’ll also have Exercise mode. Sometimes elderly have to do exercises which they won’t execute spontaneously. When this is the case, the psychotherapist will be able to activate a certain bubble and give it a dull colour so the user will know they will have to place their foot over there.

The Candy Shop
Candy Shop is a request game in which the elderly have to help the candy shop owner to find the right candy. For this game, the user will use Matti accompanied by a screen. On the screen the owner will ask for certain candies and by tapping the right spot on the mat, you can give them to the owner. To make it harder you could also work with certain levels in which the requests get harder and eventually, you could leave the image out from a certain candy on the mat and then the user will have to remember what candy used to be in that spot.

Town Crossing
Town crossing is also a request game and hardware-wise it also uses Matti accompanied by a screen. In this game, the user will be in a virtual town (cartoon or more realistic) and will have to give its character what it needs. For example when it needs a loaf of bread you will have to go to the bakery to get it. We want to make this game as visual as possible, for example, the shops will be communicated to the user by using an easy to recognize image (e.g. bakery = a loaf of bread, church = cross, …).

Eventually the presentation was just for the jury and for Arno Penders from Matti, sadly enough students couldn’t listen to each other’s presentation.  After the presentation we got some remarks of the jury and Arno. The most important feedback was:
They liked concept one (Bubble Pop) and concept three (Town Crossing) the most. The next step could be to fuse this two ideas into one as the jury really wanted us to include a storyline into the game, something which the first concept does not have.
They asked how we would sell our ideas to the world. This is something to consider as we move on with the project.
